Super Typhoon Krathon killed at least two people and left a trail of destruction in southern Taiwan on October 3, 2024. Heavy rain and winds pounded the major port city of Kaohsiung as power was cut for hundreds of thousands of homes across the island. On the same day as the storm was bearing down, an electrical fire at a hospital in southern Pingtung county killed nine people. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
