Four people were arrested in Hong Kong on June 4, 2024, on the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown. A 78-year-old woman known by her Cantonese nickname “Wong Po Po” was among those detained over sedition-related offences under the domestic national security law for chanting slogans in Causeway Bay. At least one person has since been released on bail, while several others were taken away for questioning over alleged breaches of the peace. This came as hundreds of police officers were deployed to Causeway Bay and Victoria Park, the former venue of an annual candlelight vigil on the anniversary. In 2020, the event was banned on public health grounds amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Vigil organiser Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China was disbanded in 2021, a year after Beijing imposed the national security law.
