Hong Kong leader John Lee Ka-chiu has called on residents to stay vigilant against national security risks, saying the recent convictions of opposition figures on subversion charges reflected real threats to the city. Speaking at a press conference on June 4, 2024, the Hong Kong chief executive referred to guilty verdicts handed down to 45 of 47 activists who were on trial for organising an unofficial election to preselect legislative candidates. Lee said the defendants were guilty of subversion because they had suggested election victors would “indiscriminately” veto government budgets, a contravention of the city’s mini-constitution – the Basic Law. He also said the city could only focus on economic development and livelihood issues when society was safe and stable.
