Hong Kong 47: 'Mastermind' Benny Tai jailed for 10 years for plot to overthrow government

Former legal academic and activist Benny Tai Yiu-ting, who initiated an unofficial “primary” election in Hong Kong in 2020, has been jailed for 10 years for conspiring to subvert state power. The 60-year-old is among 45 opposition politicians and activists sentenced on November 19, 2024. They were among 47 who stood trial in a landmark national security case over the unofficial election. The other 44 defendants, most of whom were primary election candidates, were jailed for between four years and two months, and seven years and nine months. The case against two of the 47 was earlier dismissed.
