A Hong Kong task force has travelled to Thailand to help rescue city residents who were reportedly lured to Southeast Asian countries and forced into illegal work. Officials from the group said on January 13, 2025, they received a positive response from Thai authorities during a meeting with a high-level anti-human trafficking committee. But Hong Kong Undersecretary for Security Michael Cheuk Hau-yip, who is leading the group in Bangkok, said that any rescue operation would be difficult since most of the 12 victims were stranded at scam centres in areas along the Thai-Myanmar or Myanmar-Laos borders.
