Recap by phillip woo

Kwai Chung Talents narrowly led one off from gate six and fended off the late challengers for a maiden win at his ninth start. He had been knocking on the door with placings in back-to-back runs. Well backed Unstoppaple whizzed home late down the outside to just miss after making his run third last and three wide from gate 12. It was a solid effort for his new trainer after showing hints of ability in two Sha Tin starts last term. California Bay stayed on for third after a prominent run on the inside from gate two. It was a better effort at his second run this term. King Oberon stayed on a non-threatening fourth after a handy run wide without cover from gate nine. He's gone all right in both starts this term. Grit Spirit ran on late for fifth after making his run at the rear from gate seven. Happy United weakened to finish next best after handing up the lead to travel third in the run. He's getting long in the tooth, but it was still a better effort at his second start this term. Healthy Healthy only plodded after a wide trip from midfield. Favourite No Other Choice was gone 250m out after vying for the lead 1,000m out.

Racing Incident Report

Race Six : (84) - CHEUNG FAT HANDICAP - Class 4 - 1200Meters

Horse No 2 GRIT SPIRIT (L116) C Y Ho Jumped awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with KWAI CHUNG TALENTS.

When placed under pressure in the Home Straight lay in.

For some distance approaching the 100 Metres was reluctant to shift to the outside of HEALTHY HEALTHY.

Horse No 3 STARRY SHOW (L074) R Kingscote Raced keenly in the middle stages and for some distance near the 800 Metres got its head up when being steadied away from VIEW OF COSMOS.

Horse No 4 UNSTOPPAPLE (L205) K C Leung Jumped only fairly.

From the outside barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

After the race an endoscopic examination was conducted on UNSTOPPABLE at the request of Trainer C S Shum.

The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea.

Before being allowed to race again, UNSTOPPABLE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 5 CALIFORNIA BAY (K364) K Teetan Jumped only fairly and then was hampered when crowded by VIEW OF COSMOS which shifted in.

Horse No 6 KING OBERON (H407) P N Wong Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.

Horse No 8 HAPPY UNITED (H208) M Chadwick When questioned M Chadwick stated that his instructions were to go forward and given the option to lead if circumstances permitted.

He said whilst HAPPY UNITED jumped well, when NO OTHER CHOICE improved to his inside in the early stages he elected to allow NO OTHER CHOICE to take the lead with a view to sitting to that runner's outside.

He said when KWAI CHUNG TALENTS then improved quickly to his outside this resulted in HAPPY UNITED obtaining a position with cover behind the lead.

Trainer J Richards confirmed the instructions and stated that, in his opinion, Jockey Chadwick would have been better suited by leading the event, particularly having regard to the manner in which it jumped tonight and the early stages of the race being run outside of standard time.

After considering his explanation the Stewards advised Jockey Chadwick that, in their opinion, he had made an error of judgement by not taking advantage of his mount's good start and riding HAPPY UNITED in a positive manner to lead the event in the early stages.

When questioned regarding his riding out to the finish of the event M Chadwick stated that after testing his mount in the Home Straight he was unable to fully ride it out close to the finish due to KING OBERON shifting in slightly.

Jockey Chadwick was reminded of his obligations to ensure that he fully rides his mounts out to the finish of every race.

Horse No 9 NO OTHER CHOICE (K049) A Badel When questioned A Badel stated that he was instructed to ride the horse where comfortable.

He said when NO OTHER CHOICE showed pace in the early stages and HAPPY UNITED did not contest the lead, his mount was able to obtain the front without being pressured to do so.

He added when placed under pressure in the Home Straight NO OTHER CHOICE failed to respond to his riding and raced in a disappointing manner.

Trainer C Fownes advised that the horse had pleased him leading into the event and he had expected it to perform well.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race found that horse to have a heart condition which requires further assessment.

Notwithstanding a further veterinary assessment, the performance of NO OTHER CHOICE was considered disappointing.

Before being allowed to race again, NO OTHER CHOICE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 10 KWAI CHUNG TALENTS (L144) M L Yeung Bumped at the start.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 11 VIEW OF COSMOS (L060) M F Poon Shifted in at the start and was bumped.
