Gabon’s newly re-elected leader Ali Bongo, who was detained on August 30, 2023, by the country’s military, is seen as the latest Western military ally to fall. But Ali Bongo and his father, who ruled Gabon for over four decades, had been steadily building relations with China, making it Gabon’s largest trading partner. The regime overthrow now brings uncertainty to the future of those ties.
