Surging mpox outbreaks involving multiple strains found in Africa are spreading to Asia, with Pakistan, Thailand and the Philippines reporting cases as of late August 2024. Asian countries have been closely monitoring mpox cases since the WHO announced a public health emergency because of the outbreaks. Thailand has confirmed Asia’s first case of a new mpox variant called Clade 1b. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that 3.6 per cent of known mpox deaths so far in 2024 involved the Clade 1a strain. The mortality rate of Clade 1b infections, however, was not immediately known.
