Several hundred people and possibly even thousands may have been killed after the most powerful cyclone in nearly a century hit the French Indian Ocean archipelago of Mayotte. Cyclone Chido, which struck on the morning of December 14, 2024, was the latest in a string of storms worldwide that experts say have been fuelled by climate change. The “exceptional” cyclone was supercharged by particularly warm Indian Ocean waters, according to meteorologist Francois Gourand of the Meteo France weather service.
