Sudan faces a “huge biological risk” after one of two military groups fighting for control of the country seized a laboratory where hazardous pathogens that cause measles, cholera and other diseases are stored, a World Health Organization representative said on April 25, 2023. The official did not specify whether the lab in the capital Khartoum was occupied by the army or the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Since the two parties started fighting on April 15, tens of thousands of people have been forced to evacuate. A 72-hour ceasefire began on April 24, but there are few signs yet that the two sides are ready to negotiate.
