‘Starvation cult’ leader condemned by Kenyan president as death toll rises

More victims of a starvation cult have been found in a forest in eastern Kenya as a search and rescue operation continues. Authorities fear the death toll, which stands at 73 as of April 24, 2023, could rise further. The Kenyan Red Cross said that 212 people were reported missing on April 24. President William Ruto condemned Makenzie Nthenge, the leader of the Good News International Church, who allegedly told his followers to starve themselves to “meet Jesus”.
