Cynthia Houniuhi and 26 other law students banded together in 2019 and started a campaign to bring climate change to the world's top court. They asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to define the obligations of states to combat climate change and the consequences for not doing so. On March 29, 2023, the United Nations General Assembly voted on, and adopted by consensus, the resolution spearheaded by Vanuatu.
