United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has denounced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a violation of the founding UN Charter and international law. The UN chief made his remarks on February 22, 2023, at a meeting to mark the one-year anniversary of the start of the conflict. Guterres also called out Russian officials for threatening possible use of nuclear weapons. Since Moscow invaded its neighbour on February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other officials have repeatedly hinted that the country could use a nuclear weapon if threatened.
