UN human rights body to investigate Iran’s deadly crackdown on anti-government protesters

The United Nations Human Rights Council passed a resolution on November 24, 2022, launching an investigation of Iran’s deadly crackdown on anti-government protesters following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. The Iranian woman died in police custody in September after being arrested for allegedly not wearing her hijab properly. Her death has sparked nationwide demonstrations. More than 14,000 people, including children, have been arrested during the unrest, according to the UN rights chief Volker Turk. More than 400 people had been killed in connection with the protests, said Norway-based group Iran Human Rights.
