United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has urged rich countries to tax windfall profits of fossil fuel companies. During a speech opening the UN General Assembly on September 20, 2022, he said the world must “hold fossil fuel companies and their enablers to account”. Guterres proposed that funds collected should be used to help countries affected by the climate crisis and people struggling with rising food and energy prices.
