Evacuations after dramatic eruption of volcano on the island of La Palma, in Spain’s Canary Islands

Lava blasted into the air and formed rivers of glowing, molten rock that was streaming towards two villages on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma on September 19, 2021. Officials said 5,000 to 10,000 people are being evacuated from nearby areas after the eruption at 3.15pm local time in the Cabeza de Vaca region of the Cumbre Vieja national park in the south of the Atlantic Ocean island. Four villages were in the path of the lava, but no injuries have been reported so far. The area had been on high alert after more than 22,000 tremors in the space of a week were reported in Cumbre Vieja, one of the most active volcanic regions in the Canaries where the last major eruption was in 1971.
