Thousands of residents on high alert as volcano buries Indonesian villages in ash

Thousands of Indonesian residents have been put on high alert after Mount Semeru erupted on December 4, 2022, burying villages in East Java. Authorities have raised their highest-level warning for the area and issued an 8km (5-mile) no-go zone. Affected villagers, fearing a second eruption of the tallest volcano on Java island, have sought emergency help.
