The Philippines and Indonesia have reached an agreement for a Filipino woman to be returned home after 14 years on death row in Jakarta. In 2010, Mary Jane Veloso was sentenced to death for drug trafficking after she was arrested in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta. Authorities said they found 2.6kg (5.7lbs) of heroin in her suitcase. She maintained she was deceived by recruiters who promised her a job abroad and advocates said she was a victim of human trafficking. Indonesia’s Law and Human Rights Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra said Indonesia will fully respect any decision made by the Philippine president regarding Veloso’s case, including if she is granted clemency.
