Indonesia's outgoing parliament has walked back plans to ratify changes to election rules, its deputy speaker said on August 22, 2024. The decision came after demonstrations flared outside parliament, prompting security forces to fire tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters. Analysts said the proposal was part of President Joko Widodo’s efforts to secure the political interests of his family and president-elect Prabowo Subianto.
