Sakurajima volcano erupts as Japan raises highest alert level for mass evacuation

Dozens of people have been ordered to evacuate their homes in Japan following the eruption of Sakurajima volcano in Kyushu island. The Japan Meteorological  Agency issued its top-level alert after the blast happened on July 24, 2022. The explosion propelled large cinders about 2.5km (1.5 miles) off the crater and spewed smoke around 300 metres (984ft) high. No damage or injuries have been reported so far.
