Japanese sake brewing joins Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list

Japan's centuries-old tradition of sake brewing has been officially recognised by Unesco as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage made the announcement on December 4, 2024, during a meeting in Paraguay. While sake has faced declining popularity in recent years, by highlighting the cultural significance of sake brewing, Japan aims to revitalise this ancient tradition and encourage future generations to appreciate its rich history and unique taste.
