A massive column of ash and smoke rose about 1,000 metres (3,280ft) above Indonesia's Mount Sinabung after the volcano erupted on July 28, 2021. The eruption in North Sumatra province lasted about 12 minutes, according to the local geological agency. Authorities have instructed people to avoid a 5km (3-mile) zone around the crater that has been left unoccupied for years because of increased volcanic activity.
