Mount Semeru in the Indonesian province of East Java erupted on December 4, 2021, sending a massive column of ash and smoke 12km (7 miles) into the air. At least 14 villagers have died from severe burns. Of the 56 people hospitalised, 16 people were in critical condition as of December 5. More than 1,300 people have been evacuated to safety, but several people remain missing. One of about 128 active volcanoes in Indonesia, Mount Semeru has erupted several times since December 2020.
