One-man band publisher behind the only Burmese-language newspaper in the US

Thakhin Kai Bwor has been publishing the Myanmar Gazette – the only Burmese-language newspaper in the US – for nearly 15 years. The 54-year-old edits and lays out the paper, and hand-delivers it to California neighbourhoods with a large Burmese-American presence. The paper, and its popular online edition, target around 300,000 Burmese speakers living in the US, and are offered for free, with advertising support from mostly Burmese-owned businesses. Its coverage is highly critical of Myanmar’s military coup in February, informed by Bwor’s own experience taking part in anti-government protests in 1988.
