Myanmar’s military government released more than 6,000 prisoners and cut the sentences of other inmates on January 4, 2025, as part of a mass amnesty marking the 77th anniversary of independence from Britain. Hundreds of political detainees have been jailed for opposing army rule since February 2021, when the military seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. The political coup was met with massive nonviolent resistance, which has since turned into a widespread armed struggle.
