Myanmar has seen a surge in opium production since the military junta seized power in 2021. The country has now overtaken Afghanistan as the world’s biggest opium producer in 2023, after the Taliban government’s crackdown on the trade. Farmers in the country’s remote mountains have turned to the cash crop, which is a raw material for manufacturing heroin, amid the social and economic unrest since the military coup.
