‘Our future is fading’: Myanmar youth dodge compulsory military service by fleeing to Thailand

Thousands of people lined up at the Thai embassy in Myanmar’s capital Yangon on February 16, 2024, hoping to leave Myanmar after the ruling junta enforced military service. The military announced conscription for men aged 18-35 and women aged 18-27 to serve for at least two years, as it struggles to quell opposition to its 2021 coup.
