Democrat Jon Ossoff defeated Republican David Perdue in Senate run-off elections in the US state of Georgia on January 6, 2021. Earlier in the day, his fellow Democrat Raphael Warnock won the other Georgia Senate seat that was up for grabs. Their wins split the US Senate 50-50 between Democratic and Republican Party members, placing vice-president-elect Kamala Harris in a position to cast deciding votes in the upper chamber. Democrats will now control both houses of Congress, having already retained a majority in the House of Representatives in November elections. The Senate victory strengthened president-elect Joe Biden’s position to push his legislative agenda after he takes office on January 20.
