If it wasn’t for Pokemon Go, 16-year-old Cheng Yip-kai might have never known 75-year-old Lai Ching-lung, an emeritus professor at the University of Hong Kong’s medical faculty and a Pokemon Go enthusiast. When Cheng competed in his first Pokemon World Championships in Yokohama, Japan, he was supported through crowdfunding. Among the contributors was Lai, a renowned liver expert. Cheng was eliminated in the preliminary rounds of the 2023 contest, but in a reversal of fortune one year later he became the first Hongkonger to win the world championship. Lai and Cheng say the game’s appeal is, more than anything, about bonding and companionship.
