Pokemon celebrates 25th anniversary as rare cards fetch six figures amid pandemic

Pokemon is celebrating its 25th anniversary on February 27, 2021. Debuting as a video game on Japan’s Nintendo Game Boy in 1996, the franchise now includes a card game, movies, toys and a mobile augmented-reality game. Now some rare Pokemon cards are fetching up to six figures at auctions. The price surge comes as many are returning to their childhood games and hobbies during the coronavirus pandemic.
