Hi-tech vs low-tech: Hong Kong to lose its only drinks-carton recycler to a microelectronics centre

Llewellyn Cheung

Hong Kong’s only drinks-carton recycler Mil Mill faces closure after its government-backed landlord, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, refused to extend its lease. Co-founder Harold Yip said the three-year old company was told to make way for a microelectronics centre next to its site. With no solution in hand, Yip is now looking to relocate the plant to Singapore. Critics say the government’s vision to turn Hong Kong into an IT hub is causing a brain drain from other sectors in the local innovation industry.
