China confirmed on October 29, 2024, the detention of a South Korean citizen accused of espionage. The Chinese foreign ministry, which did not identify the individual charged, said it had notified the South Korean embassy in Beijing about the arrest. The man, said to be in his 50s, was working for a Chinese semiconductor company in Hefei when he was detained in late 2023, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap. It is the first time a South Korean national has been held under an expanded counter-espionage law that took effect in July 2023.
