US President Donald Trump says he is considering 10 per cent tariffs on imports from China starting on February 1, 2025. In his first press conference the day after his inauguration, Trump said on January 21, 2025, that the tariffs would be a penalty for the flow of fentanyl, a drug blamed for thousands of deaths in the US annually. On his inauguration day, the new US leader did not mention tariffs on China, despite his earlier vows to do so on his first day in office. In response, China said it was firmly committed to safeguarding its national interests. Trump is also considering 25 per cent tariffs on America’s neighbours Mexico and Canada, also to start on February 1, in a bid to push them to stop shipments of the opioid from reaching the US.
