China has launched the world’s first space mission to collect rock samples from the far side of the moon. The Chang’e 6 lifted off aboard a Long March-5 rocket from Wenchang Satellite Launch Centre on Hainan Island on May 3, 2024. It marked the start of a 53-day journey to the side of the moon that faces away from Earth. The unmanned spacecraft will collect soil and rocks from the landing site and bring them back for study.
