In 1969, the United States landed the first human on the moon, beating the former Soviet Union in the Cold War-era space race. Although the USSR eventually split up, space exploration ambitions remain in many countries around the world. Today, there are 77 space agencies around the world. Of the four nations which have reached the moon, three are in Asia – Japan, China and India. Many observers focus on the two largest superpowers, the US and China, because of their tech and space exploration rivalries. However, today’s space race is increasingly being defined by cooperation rather than competition and Asian nations are important players.
