China and Russia hold call after Saudi peace talks over Ukraine exclude Moscow

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi reportedly held a call with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on August 7, 2023. Beijing said that Wang reaffirmed its close ties shared with Moscow, and said China would continue to “uphold an independent and fair stance” on the Ukraine crisis. The call came days after peace talks on the Ukraine war in Saudi Arabia, which were attended by over 40 countries but excluded Russia.
