Chinese President Xi Jinping met Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Beijing on July 8, 2024. The unannounced visit by Hungary’s leader was part of a self-styled “peace mission” to end Russia’s war with Ukraine. During the talks, Beijing and Budapest called for a ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow. Since Budapest took over the rotating presidency of the European Council in early July, Orban has also visited Kyiv and Moscow, drawing criticism from some EU members.
