Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang will not attend Asean meetings in Indonesia, which got under way on July 8, 2023, extending a two-week absence. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Qin will miss the meetings because of “health reasons”. Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat and Qin’s predecessor, will attend instead. Wang is one step higher in the Communist Party’s hierarchy and his presence reflects the importance China places on its relationship with Asean.
