China’s top economic planner said on May 6, 2021, said Beijing had “indefinitely suspended” high-level economic dialogue with Australia. The announcement was made following Australia’s move last month to revoke participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative by the state of Victoria, after deeming its agreements with Beijing to be at odds with Canberra’s foreign policy. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said the move showed that Australia is not genuine in wanting to improve relations. China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) suspended all activities under the framework of the China-Australia Strategic Economic Dialogue, which aims to facilitate trade cooperation between the two countries.
