Beijing court hands down suspended death sentence to Australian writer Yang Jun for spying

Australian writer Yang Jun was given a suspended death sentence by a Beijing court on February 5, 2024, for espionage. The sentence, which came five years after the Chinese-born citizen was detained in 2019, is believed to be one of the harshest China has handed down for spying in recent years. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed “ outrage”  over the sentencing.
