China rejects Canada’s accusation over ‘arbitrary detention’ of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor

China has strongly rejected accusations from Canada on the “arbitrary detention” of two Canadians, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, who were detained in China in 2018. They were suspected to have engaged in activities that China said endangers its national security. In a news conference on February 18, 2021, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Canada is “distorting facts” and has “lodged stern representations” with the Canadian side.
