China said it was “concerned” that Twitter has locked its US embassy account over a Xinjiang-related post. Hua Chunying, spokeswoman for China’s foreign ministry, on January 21, 2021, accused the social media company of “double standards”, arguing that the Chinese embassy in the US was “clarifying facts and explaining truth” about what happens in Xinjiang.
Citing its policy against “dehumanisation”, Twitter had suspended the account a day earlier over a post saying Uygur women in Xinjiang were “no longer baby making machines”. Critics say the Chinese government is forcibly sterilising minority Uygur women.
