PHILIP WOO’S FORMLINE
Nebraskan notched a third placing from four straight Valley 1,200m runs following a front-running second to Concorde Star two runs ago following a downgrade before tiring late for sixth after working hard to track the pace from gate 11. The step back to 1,000m and gate one should work the oracle. Modest Gentleman returned to form with a rallying third over the dirt 1,200m in December before dashing late for sixth and second in back-to-back runs over the Valley 1,000m from gate 11 and 10. He must be respected from a better draw. Island Breezes has gate 11 but has closed nicely for second to rival Macanese Master and third to Savvy Twinkle in his past two C&D starts and remains one for the shortlist. Macanese Master made use of a better draw for a speed-tracking C&D win at $22 two starts ago before dictating the pace for third over the dirt 1,200m. He can place despite a tricky gate.
TROUBLE IN RUNNING
ISLAND BREEZES (J479) jumped only fairly - Race 385.
NEBRASKAN (J304) bumped at the start - Race 345.
SPICY SPANGLE (J087) bumped at the start - Race 385.
EXCEED THE WISH (J480) near the 900M was steadied when being shifted in. Shifted out and away from a runner near the 300M and made slight contact with another runner. Rider stated that his mount, which was having its first race start on the All Weather surface, would be better suited by racing at Happy Valley and dropping back in distance to 1000M. Post-race vet inspection did not show any significant findings - Race 365.
RACINGRACE (J102) noted to have lost its left hind plate after the race - Race 518.
BRILLIANT FIRE (J441) after travelling a short distance shifted out and bumped - Race 345.
ORIENTAL SURPRISE (K028) from the outside barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Had difficulty obtaining clear running between the 350M and the 250M - Race 385.
TAIHANG SCENERY (J314) shifted out at the start and was bumped. In the middle stages raced keenly and near the 600M got its head up when being steadied. Between the 400M and the 300M was held up for clear running when being shifted out - Race 809.
SPORTIC WARRIOR (J385) was slow to begin - Race 265.
MACANESE MASTER (J532) jumped only fairly - Race 365.
MODEST GENTLEMAN (G352) bumped at the start. From a wide barrier was then shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Held up for clear running making the Home Turn and near the 300M improved into a narrow run and as a result made contact with a runner - Race 385.
KING ALLOY (K099) shifted out on jumping and was bumped - Race 334.
SILVER KING (H420) raced wide and without cover from the 800M. Rider reported that he was issued with no specific instruction other than to have the horse race where comfortable, particularly as it is a known "roarer". He said when his mount jumped well he was able to hold a more forward position than at its previous race starts. Following the race was found that horse to be a "roarer" which had previously been reported. Finished tailed out and performance was considered unacceptable. Has since performed to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and passed an official vet exam - Race 303.
