Recap by phillip woo

I Excelle rolled to the lead 1,300m out from gate two, set slick fractions and kept finding to just beat Smart City for a first win at his 11th start. He took advantage of a better draw after catching the eye ridden back in the field from wide draws in his first two starts. Smart City ran on nicely with one wider out to finish a close second after a one-off trip from better than midfield. The step up to 1,800m nearly worked the oracle after misfiring over inadequate sprint trips to start the term. Perfect Pairing surged late through the centre to just get the bob down for third after making his run two from the rear.

Racing Incident Report

Race One : (108) - SHEK MUN HANDICAP - Class 5 - 1800Meters

Horse No 1 STAR BROSE (J463) Z Purton When questioned regarding his riding on the Home Turn Z Purton stated that after shifting to the outside of CAN'T GO WONG near the 500 Metres his intention was to follow GOLDEN FORTUNE, a last start winner, or alternatively follow KINGLY DEMEANOR into the race.

He said for this reason he continued to shift out with a view to obtaining clear running.

He said as he did so CAN'T GO WONG shifted out which presented a run to his inside, however, he was of the opinion his best option was to continue to follow the fancied runners into the race, particularly as the early stages had been run inside of standard time and he was concerned the leaders would commence to give ground.

He said after following GOLDEN FORTUNE from the 500 Metres that runner did not improve as he had anticipated and for this reason he shifted to its inside to follow KINGLY DEMEANOR.

He said when KINGLY DEMEANOR did not improve sufficiently in the early stages of the Home Straight to provide him with clear running this resulted in STAR BROSE being held up for clear running between the 450 Metres and the 200 Metres where he was able to improve between GOLDEN FORTUNE and KINGLY DEMEANOR.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 3 CAN'T GO WONG (H087) K C Leung Near the 1700 Metres was eased to avoid KINGLY DEMEANOR (Apprentice H Y Yuen) which shifted in when not sufficiently clear.

Apprentice Yuen was advised to exercise more care.

Over the concluding stages raced tight between KINGLY DEMEANOR and PERFECT PAIRING which shifted out and as a result could not be fully tested.

When questioned K C Leung stated that he was instructed to obtain a forward position and for this reason he rode his mount along in the early stages to comply with the instructions.

He said after following CIRCUIT DUFFY during the event his intention was to endeavour to shift to the outside of CIRCUIT DUFFY and KINGLY DEMEANOR to secure clear running.

He said when GOLDEN FORTUNE maintained its position to his outside making the Home Turn this resulted in CAN'T GO WONG being unable to improve until near the 400 Metres when it shifted back to the inside of CIRCUIT DUFFY to follow I EXCELLE.

When questioned if there was an opportunity to follow I EXCELLE into the race making the Home Turn and in the early stages of the Home Straight Jockey Leung stated that he was concerned that runner would not improve into the Home Straight and he felt his best option was to follow the fancied runners GOLDEN FORTUNE and KINGLY DEMEANOR.

After considering his explanation the Stewards found the tactics adopted by Jockey Leung were reasonable in the circumstances.

Horse No 5 YOUNG FIGHTER (K464) L Ferraris Shifted in at the start and was bumped.

When questioned L Ferraris stated that his instructions were to go forward.

He said in the early stages he rode his mount along to comply with the instructions but leaving the 1400 Metres when caught wide and to the outside of KINGLY DEMEANOR he elected to restrain his mount to obtain a position with cover.

He said his decision to do so was influenced by the fact that I EXCELLE and KINGLY DEMEANOR, which were racing in the lead, were keen and he was of the opinion he would not be able to cross those runners and also the fact that the early stages were run inside of standard time.

He added after restraining his mount to obtain cover he was able to settle behind SMART CITY near the 1100 Metres.

Horse No 6 I EXCELLE (K502) C Y Ho Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 8 FORTUNE KINGO (K457) C L Chau When being shifted to the outside of YOUNG FIGHTER near the 400 Metres lay in and as a result was awkwardly placed close to YOUNG FIGHTER.

Noted to have lost its right front plate after the race.

Horse No 9 CIRCUIT DUFFY (J501) M L Yeung A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 10 YOUNG STRIKER (K029) J Orman A veterinary inspection immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer" which had previously been reported.

Horse No 11 SMART CITY (J213) M Chadwick On jumping was bumped by YOUNG FIGHTER which shifted in.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 12 SPECIAL HEDGE (H354) H T Mo Near the 400 Metres was eased when disappointed for clear running between PERFECT PAIRING and CAN'T GO WONG which shifted in.

SPECIAL HEDGE was then shifted to the outside of STAR BROSE near the 200 Metres to continue into clear running and was steadied to avoid STAR BROSE when being shifted to its outside.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer" which had previously been reported.
