Recap by phillip woo

Stellar Express led from gate five and shot clear by three lengths at the 200m for a fourth win over the straight 1,000m and two on the trot from 28 starts. He made full use of the light weight despite a rise in class. Odds-on favourite Colourful King ran on strongly for second after getting held up for a run until the 150m ridden near last following an awkward start. He's racing very well. Invincible Sage stayed on well for third after a prominent run from gate six. It was a return to form by the former Group One winner. Whacked late in betting Wunderbar ran on well to just miss a placing after working into the open on the far side 200m out following a patient ride third last from gate two. He rarely produces a bad run over the straight 1,000m. Magic Control ran on steadily for fifth after making his run behind midfield near the far side from gate three.

Racing Incident Report

Race Eight : (321) - THE BAUHINIA SPRINT TROPHY (HANDICAP) - Class G3 - 1000Meters

Horse No 2 WUNDERBAR (H411) H Bowman When questioned H Bowman stated that with the expected fast pace of the event he had been requested to ride the horse in a conservative manner in the early stages to allow it to finish the race off strongly in the Home Straight.

He added in accordance with those instructions, on jumping he elected to improve behind the leading division where his mount travelled well before finishing the race off strongly when placed under pressure in the Home Straight.

Trainer J Size confirmed the instructions issued.

Horse No 6 COLOURFUL KING (K227) Z Purton Jumped awkwardly.

When questioned Z Purton stated that whilst the intention was to settle back in the field, in the early stages he had endeavoured to hold a position to the inside of VICTOR THE WINNER as he was concerned had he shifted to the outside rail he would have been following horses that would not provide him with the opportunity to improve into the race.

He said in the early stages when positioned to the outside of WUNDERBAR that horse shifted out and when he was unable to prevent WUNDERBAR from taking his mount towards the outside rail he was obliged to race behind WE ARE HERO and CHATEAUNEUF.

He said from the 500 Metres he was badly held up for clear running behind those runners until near the 200 Metres when he was able to secure a narrow run between CHATEAUNEUF and WE ARE HERO which shifted in.

He added when WE ARE HERO then shifted back out COLOURFUL KING became unbalanced when crowded between CHATEAUNEUF and WE ARE HERO for some distance near the 150 Metres before finishing the race off well thereafter.

After considering his explanation the Stewards found the tactics adopted by Jockey Purton were reasonable in the circumstances.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 7 LADY'S CHOICE (H155) M F Poon Jumped only fairly.

Horse No 8 BABY CRYSTAL (H081) M L Yeung Noted to have lost its right front plate after the race.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 9 CHATEAUNEUF (J219) H Bentley Near the 200 Metres COLOURFUL KING improved into a narrow run between CHATEAUNEUF and WE ARE HERO which lay in.

A short distance later WE ARE HERO (Apprentice E C W Wong) was then shifted to the outside of BABY CRYSTAL to find clear running, resulting in COLOURFUL KING being crowded out onto CHATEAUNEUF which was steadied near the 150 Metres.

Apprentice Wong was reprimanded and advised he must ensure that he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground in similar circumstances.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race which included an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea.

Before being allowed to race again, CHATEAUNEUF will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Horse No 10 STELLAR EXPRESS (J186) A Atzeni A Atzeni was fined the sum of $3,000 for returning to scale 2 lbs overweight.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 11 WE ARE HERO (G207) E C W Wong Had difficulty obtaining clear running near the 200 Metres.

Raced tight between BABY CRYSTAL and COLOURFUL KING approaching the 150 Metres.
