Recap by phillip woo

Punted late Sugar Sugar had a rails run in midfield and got up in the final few metres for a seventh win from 48 starts. He relished the downgrade and return to his favourite Valley 1,650m. Giant Ballon ran on well for second after a one-off trip from better than midfield. He had shown hints of ability in his first three starts across both tracks. Favourite Winning Money succumbed late for third after working hard to eventually clear Lean Master for the lead 650m out from gate nine. He's a winner in waiting with placings in three consecutive runs. Golden Luck found a few too good after sitting third and one off the fence from gate five. It was another honest performance. Punted late Lakeshore Hero made heaps of ground late through the centre after making his run at the rear from gate 12. It was a good performance carrying 7lb more following a win. Victor The Rapid ran on without threatening down the outside after making his run third last from gate 10. He should find his mark shortly in this grade. Speedy Trident made some progress late after biding his time three from the rear.

Horse No 8 WINNING MONEY (J116) Z Purton When questioned Z Purton stated that his instructions were to hold the lead in accordance with the horse's usual racing pattern.

He said in the early stages after jumping well he obtained a position to the outside of LEAN MASTER and he had expected that horse not show as much pace as his mount and therefore he would be able to cross that runner.

He said when LEAN MASTER continued to hold its position to his inside entering the Back Straight he elected to allow WINNING MONEY to stride forward to cross that runner as he was of the opinion had he endeavoured to restrain his mount it would have commenced to race keenly and also as it has a tendency to hang out in its races.

He added as a consequence throughout the middle stages WINNING MONEY set a faster pace than he would have liked.

Trainer K W Lui confirmed the instructions issued and also agreed with Jockey Purton that WINNING MONEY has a tendency to race keenly and hang out when restrained.

Sent for sampling post-race.
