Recap by phillip woo

Nine-year-old Healthy Happy led and lifted to reclaim the lead 150m out after briefly getting headed by Steps Ahead to cause an upset win. It was his sixth win and fourth over 1,400m from 44 starts. Steps Ahead found one just too good after poking his head in front 300m out following a one-off trip from better than midfield. It was another honest performance. Hong Lok Golf got going late to take third travelling one off with cover from behind midfield. It was a good effort carrying top weight. Chiu Chow Spirit came from last and widest out to just miss a placing. He's as honest as the day is long over this course and distance. Huge Wave lost a placing late after taking off from near the rear 700m out to nearly draw level for the lead 300m out. It was an OK effort up in a higher class. Punted late Gustosisimo only plodded after sitting on the winner's back. He appeared to need the outing. Mickley ran on without threatening from near the rear.

Racing Incident Report

Race Eight : (63) - BEIJING HANDICAP - Class 2 - 1400Meters

Horse No 2 TAJ DRAGON (H164) H Bowman A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 3 HEALTHY HAPPY (D435) C L Chau Shifted in at the start and was bumped.

Horse No 5 STEPS AHEAD (J263) Z Purton Shortly after the start bumped with HONG LOK GOLF.

After being crossed by TOURBILLON PRINCE near the 1000 Metres commenced to race keenly and was steadied to avoid TOURBILLON PRINCE.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 7 WONDER KIT (G455) D Probert Jumped only fairly.

Raced keenly when being crossed by GUSTOSISIMO leaving the 1000 Metres.

Near the 650 Metres was steadied to avoid GUSTOSISIMO.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 8 MICKLEY (K082) A Atzeni Approaching the 600 Metres commenced to race keenly and as a consequence was obliged to steady to avoid HONG LOK GOLF.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 10 HUGE WAVE (J197) A Badel A Badel was fined the sum of $5,000 for breaching Rule 100(3)(ii)(f) in that he used his whip in a manner where the hand holding the whip was above shoulder height on two occasions in the Home Straight.

When questioned regarding his riding in the middle stages and the reason he made a forward move A Badel stated that after settling back in the field, when he felt the pace of the race eased, he then elected to allow his mount to stride forward near the 800 Metres to ensure that it was able to make up ground in the Home Straight.

He added that after improving to the outside of STEPS AHEAD near the 650 Metres, that runner also commenced a forward move, resulting in HUGE WAVE being taken wider on the Home Turn but finished the race off reasonably well.

After considering the sectional times of the event which showed that between the 1200 Metres and the 800 Metres the race was run outside of standard time, the Stewards found the tactics adopted were reasonable in the circumstances.
