Recap by phillip woo

Favourite Light Years Charm ridden patiently after a tardy start, raced from second last and hit the lead 80m before knuckling down late to beat Mickley for a fourth win from nine starts. Mickley came from last and widest out to finish a close second. It was his best effort from three straight 1,400m runs. Gustosisimo came up a length short after rushing to the lead 150m out following a box-seat run. It was a better run with a step up to 1,400m at his fourth start following a Sha Tin 1,200m win in April. Healthy Happy grudgingly gave way after dictating the pace from gate seven. It was an okay effort by the eight-year-old but he is beyond his better years. Young Champion produced only a grinding effort after a rail run from midfield. Lo Rider made some ground late to finish next best after saving ground on the fence travelling behind midfield. He needed the run after a last start fourth in March's Derby. Chiu Chow Spirit ran on steadily without menacing after a wide with cover trip travelling behind midfield.

Racing Incident Report

Race Five : (802) - THE HONG KONG REUNIFICATION CUP (HANDICAP) - Class 2 - 1400Meters

Horse No 1 TAJ DRAGON (H164) E C W Wong Bumped shortly after the start.

Near the 150 Metres was steadied when crowded between BRILLIANT EXPRESS and SWIFT ASCEND (M Chadwick) which shifted out and away from LO RIDER which shifted out.

M Chadwick was advised to exercise more care.

Horse No 3 YOUNG CHAMPION (J195) B Avdulla Approaching the 300 Metres improved into a narrow run between HEALTHY HAPPY and GUSTOSISIMO and as a result made contact with the hindquarters of GUSTOSISIMO.

YOUNG CHAMPION then raced tight to the inside of GUSTOSISIMO until near the 100 Metres.

Horse No 4 LIGHT YEARS CHARM (K130) Z Purton Jumped only fairly.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 5 SOLEIL FIGHTER (J127) A Atzeni Jumped only fairly.

Near the 200 Metres was steadied when crowded between SWIFT ASCEND which shifted in before being corrected by its rider M Chadwick and LO RIDER (H Bentley) which shifted out to improve when not quite clear.

H Bentley was advised to exercise more care.

Horse No 6 GUSTOSISIMO (J303) Y L Chung Bumped on the hindquarters by YOUNG CHAMPION near the 300 Metres.

As a result GUSTOSISIMO then lay in for some distance thereafter.

Horse No 8 SWIFT ASCEND (H395) M Chadwick On jumping made contact with HEALTHY HAPPY, shifted in and then bumped with TAJ DRAGON.

After the event M Chadwick stated that the instructions were to hold a midfield position.

He said when his mount commenced well it settled in a more forward position in the early stages.

He added approaching the first turn he was obliged to make use of his mount to cross SOLEIL FIGHTER to avoid racing wide and as a consequence in the Home Straight SWIFT ASCEND did not respond to his riding.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 9 TOURBILLON PRINCE (H122) M F Poon After the event M F Poon stated that his mount was obliged to race very wide and without cover for the majority of the event when runners to his inside held their position.

He said this was the principal reason for the horse's disappointing performance.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer" which had previously been reported.

Horse No 10 LO RIDER (K161) H Bentley Shifted in at the start, made contact with GUSTOSISIMO and became unbalanced.

Shortly after the start LO RIDER was then steadied to avoid GUSTOSISIMO when racing tight to the inside of TAJ DRAGON which shifted in after making contact with SWIFT ASCEND.

Between the 350 Metres and the 200 Metres had difficulty obtaining clear running when being shifted to the outside of YOUNG CHAMPION.

Horse No 11 BRILLIANT EXPRESS (J321) A Badel After the event A Badel stated that his mount was obliged to race wide and without cover for the majority of the event and did not travel well throughout the race before giving ground in the Home Straight.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 12 MICKLEY (K082) B Thompson Jumped only fairly.

From a wide barrier was then shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

Sent for sampling post-race.
