Recap by phillip woo

Self Improvement reclaimed the lead in the dying stages after getting headed by Gummy Gummy 100m out for a fourth win over this surface and trip from 24 starts. It was a solid effort after getting pressured in front mid-race by Victory Moments. Gummy Gummy did everything right but get the win after making his run third with cover. He appreciated a step back to his preferred 1,200m following a mile defeat. Mask Rider stayed on a close third after a box-seat run. He was able to brush off a flat effort last start following a win on his local debut. Galaxy Witness dashed late to just take fourth after making his run one from the rear. He rarely produces a bad run on either surface. Punted late Must Go produced a grinding effort after peeling four wide without cover coming to the final bend following a prominent run. He did cover ground and was carrying five pounds more following a win. Mojave Desert ran on steadily near the outside to just miss fifth after a wide with cover trip from behind midfield. It was another honest effort.

Racing Incident Report

Race Seven : (491) - SA PO HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1200Meters

Horse No 1 SELF IMPROVEMENT (H337) P N Wong Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 2 GUMMY GUMMY (H089) H Bowman Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 3 MASK RIDER (K169) K De Melo When questioned, K De Melo stated that his instructions were to hold an on-pace position and lead if the pace was not too strong.

He said in the early stages when positioned to the inside of SELF IMPROVEMENT, the rider of SELF IMPROVEMENT Apprentice P N Wong showed intent on continuing forward to cross.

He said he was of the opinion that had he continued to persist to hold the lead this would result in the pace being too fast and therefore he elected to allow SELF IMPROVEMENT to cross.

Trainer W Y So confirmed the instructions issued and stated that given the early stages of the event were run outside of standard time he would have preferred for MASK RIDER to hold the lead.

After considering Jockey De Melo's explanation, the Stewards found the tactics adopted by him were reasonable in the circumstances.
