Recap by phillip woo

After moving to the lead 150m out following a box-seat run, Nice Birdie just held off the late surge of Super Hong Kong for a third win from 34 starts and first for rider Declan McDonogh. Veteran Super Hong Kong just missed by a bob of the heads after making his run three back on the fence. He had produced better efforts for fourths in two prior starts. Punted late, Mr Aladdin ran on nicely after switching into the open with two wider out upon straightening following a rails run towards the rear. It was his best effort from five outings this term. Post-time favourite California Moxie was on his tippy toes 100m out after setting a genuine pace in front from gate two. It was a positive showing down in grade with a step up to 2,200m. Joyful Champion came from last for fifth. It was a lot better effort on his past two starts. Gold Tack ran on without threatening following a one-off trip from behind midfield. He's better suited over a mile or 1,800m trip. Early favourite Smashing Express made only a mild bid after making his run at the rear from gate six. He didn't handle the step up in distance.
